Pertubuhan Pembangunan Wanita (Perak Chapter), together with MCA Ipoh Timur Division, organised a food carnival for the third year since 2009. Over the three days it was held, many activities were lined up, including singing competitions for teenagers and adults as well as Christmas carolling and Santa Claus walkabout on Christmas Day.
Ipoh food is well-known throughout the world; it is a 'treasure'; hence the Malaysian Government also supports this carnival through Tourism Perak. This carnival, which was held from 23rd to 25th Dec, 2011 at 糖水街 (Thong Sui Kai) was a good prelude to Visit Perak Year, which is just around the corner.
By converging all popular local food in one place, everyone could enjoy the wide variety of food that we offer. Y.B. Dato' Lee Chee Leong was the guest of honour.

Plain Truth Behind the Proposed RM30m Contribution to UTAR
With reference to this article by NH Chan dated 6th Oct 2010.
I was shocked and upset to see an article on CPI by a learned judge telling a half baked story. To set the record right, I was approached by Mr Koon Yew Yin to assist his intention to donate up to RM30m to UTAR.
As a politician, I thank him for his generosity and contributions to the community. Moreover, he also expressed his intention to see the MCA President and the UTAR Council which I agreed to assist.
My intention was to facilitate and assist him in the donation to build a hostel. What transpired between UTAR and Mr Koon, I do not know, except some email sent to me. Sept 3 Sun article was incorrect, no interview was given. My lawyers are handling the matters and I told Koon's friend and he insisted on a public apology. Is it fair for me to apologise for things I have not said and done? I am trying to help and decision by the UTAR Council and the reasons are explained to the donor. I have no jurisdictions.
Be fair to me and I must reiterate that whatever email sent to me should be treated with confidentiality. Don't victimise me for things I have not said and done.

As a politician, I know there are all sorts of allegations made against UTAR. Some may be wondering the real reasons behind the millionaire Koon Yew Yin's intention behind the generous donation. I give you the truth and you be the judge. Let me give you some background development of the incident where Koon admitted that he was the man instrumental in the success of PKR taking over the Perak State Government in the Food and Wine Society Dinner held in Marie Restaurant in Greentown Ipoh. He spoke at the dinner and that was not long after 2008 General Elections and there were many members and guests. I attended the dinner and also rebutted and told the crowd, if BN had "erred, we will right the wrong". That was the first time I heard him speak for PKR and DAP. He also said he contributed monies to DAP which has been the talk of the town. We cannot deny any person to contribute political donations. I did not know his true intention and many months later, a friend of mine called me and told me that he has a close friend who needs assistance from me. I met Koon and subsequently I arranged a meeting with the MCA President. That is the truth and he explained his intention to contribute RM30 million to UTAR to build a hostel. He met the UTAR Council on a few occasions which I was not present. The negotiations went on and he emailed most of the correspondence to me. The correspondence I will treat in confidence and I hope my learned friend, NH Chan not to claim he is apolitical and not knowing the whole truth and made unnecessary allegations.
To tell the truth, during the negotiations with UTAR and even before some press conferences, Mr Koon met Nga Kor Ming for reasons which I do not know and would not like to speculate. I cannot speak for UTAR and the Council. I believe if Koon is committed to assist the students and not bear any political motive, he should acquire land to build his hostel to continue helping some of his sponsored students. I believe the people have a better idea and judge for yourself.

MCA - Education an Important Agenda
Being the secretary in charge of publicity, my Chairman has instructed me to bring some input and knowledge about the developments of MCA providing education for Malaysian Chinese who are deprived of entering universities at that time, because of limitation of places and opportunities.
MCA saw the need in the 1970s and the party started KTAR and fought for a dollar to dollar funding from the govt. KTAR provided education for thousands of students and more than one hundred thousand graduands came from KTAR. These graduates found jobs and livelihood which some may be proud of, some are corporate figures but the least they have got tertiary education.
MCA also started a college in Western Australia to provide a gateway for students who intend to further their education in Australia.
In 2002, the Ministry of Education gave UTAR a university licence and thanks to the generosity and interest of the Perak State Govt for approving 1300 acres of State land to UTAR. We raised about RM200m to build this university. All monies collected were accountable and put in well used.
Today, we have provided an avenue for the Chinese people; mainly the middle and lower income. However, recent event on the RM30m proposed by Koon created hooha and opposition parties condemn us and the people are swayed to believe, we did not want the money.
If someone wants to donate the money to build hostel, we are more than happy to accept. We do not want to see the people victimized and condemning us for not accepting such generous offer. The answers and decision by UTAR council will be best explained by them. Listen to what they have to say and judge for yourself.
